Ann Hagen - Instructional Design Strategies
One of the major instructional design strategies that is addressed in this lesson is problem based learning. Students are given a problem (need to find flight and hotel for an upcoming vacation), and must use the strategies described to make a decision for their next vacation. This realistic experience gives them the opportunity to learn a new tool for making travel decisions. The adult learning theory of experiential learning also is highly applicable to this lesson, because the learner will be directly involved in the content they are learning. Participants will also be reflecting on their experience as they present their decisions to the rest of the group.
• What type of questioning methods are you using and why are those appropriate for this content and audience?
o I will use polls to initially engage the participants in the topic. I will also use them to assess knowledge throughout the session. The polls will include a mix of multiple choice and multiple answer questions.
• Why did you organize the content this way?
o The content is organized in the way described above because the ultimate goal is for the participants to learn how to use the flight and hotel sections of Bing Travel in order to make travel decisions. By separating the two areas and looking at the tools related to each, participants will be able to “chunk” and organize their learning by topic.
• What is the purpose of the collaborative aspects of your lesson?
o The participants will be placed into breakout rooms to use the Bing Travel tools to make travel decisions. The participants will work together to make decisions based on the information learned during the session. They will also learn through explaining their search techniques to others.
• Did you use any role-play or break-out groups and why did you use those for that particular topic?
o Breakout groups will be used as explained above.
• What type of assessment strategies did you implement and why?
o At the end of the session, students will be assessed based on their presentation of their search strategies and results. This will be in the form of an oral explanation by a representative of the group.
• Did you use any real-world scenarios or problem-based learning and what was the purpose of those strategies relative to the content and audience?
o Yes. The participants will be assigned the task of searching for and choosing a flight and hotel for an upcoming vacation. The purpose of this strategy is to help the participants learn how to use the Bing Travel tool by experiencing the tool in a hands on method.
