Description of instructional design strategies
I am using a blended approach to this lesson with direct, syncronous instruction (chat, shared files and notes) and asynchronous (external links and files) elements. We will use the sharing capabilities of adobe connect in order to present guided practice to students. Lets share nutrition labels and information in a dynamic online discussion.
Through a pre poll students’ existing knowledge will be assessed. This is a quick and accurate way to quickly gather and interpret data about your students.
Direct questions with chat room responses in a shared whiteboard layout.
Content for this lesson on Nutrition Facts Labels is organized in a way that builds on the knowledge from the previous lesson on the food pyramid. Also, it provides prequisite knowledge for being able to put together healthy meals and snacks later in the course.
By using the shared whiteboard feature of adobe connect a collaborative, interactive discussion can take place between students and facillitator. For this lesson we will collaborate and go deeper into how to interpret facts and numbers from various food labels.
No break out groups were implemented for this instruction since it was geared for fourth and fifth graders. Only if there were an extraordinary amount of students and I could magically observe all the rooms would I even consider break out room discussions.
The extent of real-world scenarios that were included was just telling students to imagine they are at or just returned from the grocery store. One exercise I came up with which may be better suited for the next lesson but I included it anyway; creating healthy snacks from a list of random ingredients. The main assessment will come from various poll pod questions at the conclusion of the instruction and exercises.
