Instructional Strategies - Andrews
The basic instructional strategy used in this lesson is to get everyone involved together by focusing on solving a problem (evaluating a video speech) that they can all participate in at the same time. I learned from my first presentation that it can be difficult to give a lecture online using Adobe connect since the audio is not 2 way, (or at least we were not able to get it to work that way) so getting everyone involved from the beginning in a more multimedia way rather than just a general discussion will be key. I need to simulate less of an in person course and take more advantage of the online tools Adobe connect offers.
The assessments will start with a short quiz after the initial lecture to test their knowledge, provide feedback to them, and keep them engaged. Additional I will assess how the overall lesson went based on the level of participation. If I am not getting much feedback when we play the videos, then that would indicate the students are either not getting it, or are simply disinterested. So I need to pay better attention to how the participants are doing, by asking more questions in general, in between presenting information.
The content is organized by first providing them with guidelines to help them achieve the objectives of the course and then they are asked to apply those guidelines in a real world problem. I will use 2, possibly 3 different speeches so that they get a chance to apply their skills on a diverse set of speakers, since no speech is ever the same.
The final strategy I am employing is the use of a job aid as the evaluate the final video. I will incorporate on screen visual guidelines while the video plays so the learners can focus less on trying to remember the guidelines and more on evaluating the speech. If I had time, I might even try to time some of the guidelines with as those things happen in the video itself.
