Lesson Content
Goal:
The lesson will teach how to evaluate a Toastmaster speaker and provide them with constructive feedback. Evaluating someone on anything they do is difficult, but it is particularly difficult when you only have a few minutes to evaluate them and provide helpful feedback that does not discourage them but also has enough substance to it so they can improve on their next speech.
Objectives:
1) The learner will be able to identify at least one thing that the speaker did well and one thing they need improvement on.
2) The learner will identify problems as opposed to symptoms by identifying why the problem occurred.
3) The learner will not only identify a problem, but provide ways in which they can solve the problem.
Segments:
1) Outline what an effective speech evaluation is including guidelines on how to properly evaluate one, and the learner’s objectives in the evaluation.
2) Test the participants with a couple of quick quiz questions to see if they understand the difference between an effective and ineffective speech evaluation.
3) Provide example of a short recorded video of a speech and work directly with learners to identify what key points to evaluate on in that speech.
4) Provide them with another speech to watch and have them collaborate together to identify out what the speaker did well, and what they can improve upon using the whiteboard.
