Description of Lesson Content
The overall goal of this instructional content it to be able to identify the components of and information on “Nutrition Facts Labels”. Also, students will be able to interpret that information contained on the label should indicate whether that food falls in line with ones dietary needs. Students will be able to put together a list of healthy meal items and snacks from this information.

Part 1 – Intro, Pre-poll
Pre-assess students. Review of food pyramid. Intro to nutrition labels. What are safe food levels - 5% of daily allowance is too low, 20% is high.

Part 2 – Components of a Nutrition label
The nutrition facts label tells you about the food inside the packaging.
Servings – check the serving size. Often it is much smaller than what people eat at one time.
Nutrients – 5% of daily allowance is too low, 20% is high.
Calories – varies from person to person
‘Bad’ nutrients – fat, cholesterol, sodium
‘Good’ nutrients – Vitamins, calcium, iron

Part 3 – What do those numbers mean?, portion size
Lets analyze and discuss more numbers. What do they mean? Is this healthy for me to eat? (orange, chips, fruit roll-ups worksheet)

Part 4 – Guided practice, discussion
Lets look at some real food packages and discuss via the shared whiteboard
and chat pods.

Assignment;
Select 3 foods with nutrition facts labels from your home. Find the nutritional value for each ingredient (calories, protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins) and note which values are either too low, too high or just right for your daily, balanced diet. Post your findings to the discussion board for this assignment.
