Wine 101: The Wine-Making Process

A student who completes this lesson will be able to identify:

1. the steps involved in the wine-making process
2. basic techniques used by wine makers during the process and
how they impact the flavors in a wine

The lesson will consist of 3 segments:

1. an introduction
2. a video that demonstrates the steps in the wine-making process
3. an instructor-led discussion of how production methods can
affect the flavor of a wine

During the introduction the instructor will provide an overview of the lesson and learning objectives. The video will help students understand how grapes become wine and how wine makers can infuse different flavors into wines during each phase of the process. After the video, the instructor will discuss major production differences such as aging in oak barrels vs. stainless steel and filtered vs. unfiltered wines. The goal is for students to understand how wine-making techniques impact the flavor of the wine. Students can then seek out or avoid specific production methods based upon their palate and preferences.
