Steve Corbett - Instructional Design Strategy
This lesson uses constructive learning for its instructional design strategy. Using this strategy will support the objectives by providing basic information about football offenses from an expert perspective (i.e. via PPT presentations, educational video, etc.), and then encouraging the learner to actively build their own knowledge through a constructive, collaborative exercise.
What type of questioning methods are you using and why are those appropriate for this content and audience?
Polls will be used initially to assess prior knowledge. They will then be used to reinforce the content covered in the lesson. Questions will be assessment oriented.
Why did you organize the content this way?
The content was organized in a sequential, enabling format. Because the audience is comprised of adult learners, it will be critical to assess their basic knowledge early in the lesson and then provide some basic information to fill the gaps before proceeding to the more complex topics. Using a video to introduce the types of offenses will provide blended learning. The collaboration activity will continue the blended learning approach by giving the learners an active learning opportunity.
What is the purpose of the collaborative aspects of your lesson?
The purpose of the collaborative aspect of this lesson is to increase the social presence of the students and increase knowledge gain through social learning. One learner may remember something from the video and polls that another did not. Some learners may know more about the offenses through personal experience than others. Furthermore, the collaborative activity serves as a form of active learning to
Did you use any role-play or break-out groups and why did you use those for that particular topic?
The participants will be split into two break-out groups in order to collaboratively select the correct characteristics and players to use for the type of offense assigned to their group. Because the video will only provide the main principles of the two types of offenses, they will need to critically think about what types of players would best fit that type of offense. Doing this exercise in break-out groups will make it easier to accomplish, more interactive, and fun.
What type of assessment strategies did you implement and why?
Polls will be used to assess the learners’ absorption of the content. This will ensure key points are highlighted and reinforced in an anonymous and interactive way.
Did you use any real-world scenarios or problem-based learning and what was the purpose of those strategies relative to the content and audience?
The collaborative activity will be presented as a real real-world scenario. The learners will be told they are the coaching staff of a particular NFL team and that they need to develop a particular type of offense. They will then need to choose the types of players they need for that offense and demonstrate familiarity with the basic characteristics of the offense by selecting the correct attributes. This will help them understand that the offense a coach uses in football must match the types of players on the team.
